Boiling & Divine

BOILING AND DIVINE is a collection of artworks and series of lectures made in response to the literary and visual legacy of alchemy. Sept 17 - Oct 15, 2022 in the Hansell Art Gallery at Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles, CA.

Spring 2021, seeking both inspiration and structure, I enrolled in an 8-week course entitled "Alchemical Imagination" via Golden Dome School.

Each session examined a stage of the alchemical process: its methods, metaphors, history, symbolism, examples in art practice; all led by @thecircularserpent's boundless knowledge.

After a few sessions, I began pulling images from my archive that evoked each alchemy phase to me. At the end of the 8 weeks, I laid them out on a page of my website- one long scroll of alchemical processes visualized through my own work and musings.

When @thecircularserpent inquired about exhibiting work for a group show, her screen-grab of my photo at Hierve El Agua (the water boils) in Oaxaca included a border of another photo (a dam in Concepción, Bolivia). No stranger to layering images and a callback to my online photo collage, I printed it as such.
